Going out for Dinner in the Village

Martina Arnold 2010 428 50Alex, our guide from Switzerland tell us about a wonderful dinner at a local village in Mozambique on the accommodated MOa14 Mozambique & Kruger Beach and Bush.

Sunway Safaris runs a Tour through Mozambique, the MOa14 and it Is by far my favourite tour. Clients coming on this tour will have wonderful days spent on beautiful beaches, fresh fruits bought at the local markets, the only real bread available (called Poa’ )in Southern Africa this is important for me as a baker and of course a variety of water based activities. Included in the tour price is kayaking and snorkelling in kosi bay, but there are optiona locean safaris to see the endangered whale sharks (sometimes you're so lucky to snorkel alongside it), snorkelling with dolphins, and of course scuba diving which is why this is my favourite tour.

We also always have an awesome dinner on one of the nights in Tofo, close to Inhambane. Tofo is the holiday destination for all the South Africans over Christmas and we were there between Christmas and New Year’s. We didn’t feel like going to a restaurant in town to share our dinner experience with 40 South Africans so we decided to go to one of the restaurants on the outskirts of the village. I have been there once before when I was on holiday and the food was great!!! It’s the best chicken of my life, so we thought we would give it a shot. It got bigger since I was there last and now there is even a menu (at my time here was only a choice of chicken, antelope, fish with salad, chips or rice), so it must be going well. When we made our reservation we didn’t know if they understood us because people in Mozambique speak only Portuguese, and in this restaurant there is normally no tourists so their English is quite limited. Our Portuguese is also limited to ordering beer (what else does one need when in Mozambique?). So we got there with our clients hoping for the best and they did indeed have a table ready for 10 People. Obrigado! It’s a real proper restaurant in the location so all our chairs and little tables were different, some plastic, some wood etc, it was very charming to be somewhere the locals eat. The place was full , us and 8 other people and some people caming later to have a drink at the bar and play a game of pool. The best was NOT ONE single tourists, except for us!

The waitress spoke some English and after ordering we peeked into the “kitchen” if you can call it that to see where our food was being prepared on a braai (BBQ) that could fit exactly one lobster and two steaks. We were a bit worried if they would get it right to bring all the food together but they managed to bring all our different meals in one go and everything was hot! This is something some “proper” restaurants can’t even get right with a big group.

Me and my colleague were so impressed and the food was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S to say the least and at the fraction of the cost of one of the restaurants in town! Definitely a place I will use again when on tour, and if someone reading this is going to Tofo themselves you should try to eat in the location sometime and practice your Portuguese with the locals!
