High hopes, no expectations...

Kwando .jpg smallDee having returned from a Namibia Botswana Southern Circle had a once in a life time experience on the Kwando River in Namibia with her clients and has this to share... Doing this job you encounter many beautiful places and experiences. Ones also hears allot of stories about dangerous animals and their behaviour and you tend to not really take it to heart until it actually happens to you and only then can you appreciate those animals.

And so we had an exciting encounter with Africa’s most dangerous animal...the Hippo (Hippopotamus amphibius).  We arrived at Camp Kwando in the Caprivi strip and went on a little sunset boat cruise on the Kwando river. Winding through the bends and enjoying the scene of the calm and mirror flat water taking in the breeze and fresh air, our guide talks about the animals and tells us what we might expect to see. Several rare bird species, water monitors and hippos... We then came round one bend and he spots 3 big hippos on our left in front of us. Traveling a comfy speed he then suddenly speeds up obviously for a reason. The next moment they start charging us (the boat) with force and the boat speeds up more.

These 3 hippos came with such force and speed! We were all filled with adrenalin and excitement! Being in very safe and experienced hands we missed them and rode of further down the river, still very stunned about what we just witnessed and by luck some of us had our cameras ready and were lucky enough to get a picture of this sight!
