I was born in England to a South African mother and to an English father and I used to come to South Africa every year to visit family and friends. This is how my love for the bush began. After finishing school in England I travelled extensively before realising that my heart belonged to Africa. I moved here permanently 12 years ago and studied through FGASA (Field Guides Association of Southern Africa), this is where my guiding career began. My passion is for the bush and this is where I feel truly happy. I previously guided in lodges for 10 years and loved it, however as I was only in one region at a time and I missed the traveling to far and varied places. Therefore I made the decision to join Sunway Safaris where I could combine my two passions, being guiding and traveling. Together it was a fantastic decision!! When I am not on tour I enjoy spending my time in the bush with friends and love nothing more than socialising around the braai.
NAMIBIA & BOTSWANA SOUTHERN CIRCLE : "Dear Dirk, We returned home a few days ago, having completed the above group adventure with our guides Grace and Iton. Although we do have Iton’s email address we don’t have the correct one for Grace and wondered whether you would be able to forward this email to her. We would like to thank Grace and Iton for making our trip such a wonderful experience. We saw and did so many fascinating things; wildlife, scenery and people, and enjoyed the company of our fellow companions, who were all very friendly. Grace and Iton kept us entertained on some of the long journeys with their great senses of humour and quaint stories and made sure that we were as well prepared as possible for the various experiences. When Iton was needed to help another group because of illness, Edwin joined us, with his particular knowledge and cheerfulness. They dealt without fuss with any problems that cropped up, whether it was the window in the truck breaking and falling out, or finding that we had nowhere to stay when we reached Desert Camp. Our suggestion of sleeping in the truck was not taken seriously that day! We saw elephants by one of our lodges, a black back jackal with a puff adder in the middle of one of the Etosha tracks, a lion asleep by a parking area there and 2 mature male lions seeing two younger males off their territory. On a wildlife walk in the Okvango Delta we saw lions with their kill and on the Chobe river boat trip we saw many animals at close quarters, which was very special, especially families of elephants, and hippos out of the water and walking on the land. Thank you so much again, Grace and Iton, for our very exciting and memorable adventure – we shall not forget you or Africa, especially as I have spent much time noting all the events in my journal! And adding even more as footnotes when I remember them! We hope to send you a group photo when we have sorted through them all (several hundred), and if you come to England please get in touch. I am planning to make my quilt, Grace, from the African fabrics I bought, and when it is finished I will send you a photo. We came back to our little village and to our surprise, after all our adventures in Africa, everything seemed to be the same here! Apart from everyone wanting to hear all about it." Dee & Richard, UK
BOTSWANA WILD PARKS: "A big thank you to both of our guides but especially Grace who went out of her way with her info and her meals. So good." Bev Fitzgerald, New Zealand
CAPE TOWN TO VIC FALLS GRAND EXPLORER: "It was a great trip. The Sossusvlei dunes were definitely a highlight for me. Grace is a real credit to Sunway Safaris. She worked tirelessly to ensure we all got the most out of the trip" Kate Wallace, UK
SOUTH AFRICA RAINBOW ROUTE: "I've just arrived back home from my wonderful trip and I want to let you know how much I enjoyed my holiday. I did the South Africa Rainbow Route. It was my first guided tour, I usually travel individually, but the small group of 5 people and the interesting and exciting itinerary made me feel very comfortable travelling in a group. The trip has exceeded my expectations. Not just because of the beautiful and stunning landscapes and the amazing wildlife we saw, but mostly because of our great guides Grace and Sean this tour was truly unique. Both guides were amazing in telling us everything about the beautiful flora and fauna and most of all the people and different cultures of South Africa. Grace was the most perfect cook, the food was always delicious und healthy.I had really much fun with both Grace and Sean, they always had an open ear for every question and they gave me an idea of how living in South Africa can be.This trip was really amazing - thank you so much!!" Greetings from cold, cold Austria, Angelika Weber
